Rufus Court - Chester's hidden oasis

Map

Rufus Court Map

Nestled just inside the City Wall off Northgate Street, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, is one of Chester's most striking courtyards.
'Rufus Court was developed in 1991 from wasteground off Northgate Street. A number of 18th and 19th Century houses were derelict, including houses on the City Wall itself.
The development of Rufus Court, by the Thompson Cox Partnership, has created an intimate courtyard, with shops, cafes, offices, a wine bar and flats. The listed buildings have been restored and new buildings provide units on two levels, reflecting Chester's historic Rows.

The award-winning scheme was promoted by Chester City Council's conservation programme and has won high acclaim for regenerating an undervalued area within the historic city,
through creative intervention and small scale mixed development.'

Ancient and Modern in perfect harmony

The Romans used to have their barracks on the fields behind Rufus Court and the Roman Wall provides a backdrop for the modern buildings housing some of the quirkiest shops in Chester.

Rufus Court is, of course, the home of the world famous 'Alexander's Jazz Theatre'. It is also home to some fabulous places to eat and drink, including:

Juice Bar

Hatties Tea Shop

Joseph Benjamin Delicatessen

There are a number of specialist shops around the courtyard:

The Mews Gallery of Fine Art

Tri-active triathlon shop

The Piercing Bodz
